Career Development Department

Brighter Prospects for a Successful 2018 and beyond..

The Career Development department welcomes you, and your child/children back for a productive & constructive 2018. We are here to act as a service to support the holistic growth of your child/children into the most successful individual/s they can be, and in this regard we have a number of services that are available for all students and their families.

In 2018, our Keysborough campus welcomes Ms. Rachel Whitworth at the campus Career Counsellor. Ms. Whitworth comes with vast experience in education, both in school settings as well as her time working in the Career Development space at Monash University. She will be available Wednesday – Friday for KBC students, and she looks forward to developing Career Development services for KBC students and families. Students at our Eastmeadows campus in 2018 have the services of Ms. Esma Yucel, whose interests in alumni networking and opportunity creation, allow EMC students a wonderful vehicle to develop their own capabilities. Ms. Yucel will be available all week, alongside her alumni outreach role. At Meadow Fair & Sunshine, Mr. Mithat Demir will continue to promote Career Development opportunities for these campuses, and Mr. Scott Westray will continue to float between all campuses to both guide the department, as well as support the Career Development team in bringing information and opportunities to our students. In 2018, the Career Development department has instituted a new tool via our website in the link below. The ‘News Feed’ will be the primary vehicle that the department will utilise to promote key events, information and opportunities to our students and communities. It is free to subscribe, and each school day afternoon a new post will be shared with the latest news that the Career Development department has been made aware of, that can help your son/daughter construct the future they want. Please encourage them to subscribe to this service, and feel free to subscribe yourself as well! Go to, and pop your name & eMail into the subscription area. Simple as that!

The department has more plans for 2018, which we will share as the year progresses. Please feel free to contact your campus advisor/counsellor or the Career Development Coordinator through the year if you have any queries or wish to make an appointment. Please take some time to look around our website as there is a wealth of information available there, including some specifically for parents (the website is also mobile-friendly). We look forward to supporting your child’s ambitions in 2018 & beyond!

Remember, Career Development is not just for VCE years. In Australia, we define ‘Career Development’ as “the complex process of managing life, learning, and work over the lifespan” (Career Industry Council of Australia, 2011), and so the earlier the journey to constructing the future your son/daughter wants starts, the brighter prospects for a successful future!

The Last Roll Call

On the 22nd of February, students from Year 10 and 12 attended a cross-campus event, The Last Roll Call, celebrating the achievement and success of the 2017 alumni.

We were ushered into the lobby of the Australian Events Centre, where we enjoyed lunch with the graduates and our peers. We had the opportunity to interact with the alumni and some of the keynote speakers; and were regaled by the stories and experiences they shared, providing a telling insight into the harsh realm of the post-school reality.

Commencing the program, our executive principle delivered a unique address, emphasising the importance of inclusivity and a shared sense of belonging to a school identity. Whilst he acknowledged the academic excellence of our students, he warned against one-dimensional measures of success, promoting and celebrating all kinds of achievements and milestones.

After a rousing speech by the East Meadows Careers officer, three Alumni took to the stage to share their individual Year 12 experiences. They spoke of the hardships and stress that accompanied their studies, before delving into the importance of the bonds of friendship, and the virtue of hard work in their VCE journeys.

The 2017 graduates – met with enthusiastic applause - then assembled on stage, and each alumnus was given the opportunity to introduce themselves and their future aspirations to the audience.

Award-winning comedian, Khaled Khalafalla, had the crowd in stitches in his subsequent stand-up comedy talk, before returning to deliver a moving speech regarding the importance of family ties and the community spirit. Drawing on his own personal feelings of displacement and distant connection with his origin, family and community, Khaled emphasised the benefit of making ‘people the purpose’, and finding fulfilment in helping others. He spoke of the virtue of honesty, prayer, genuine love and momentum, and encouraged his audience to be the tools for their own success.

Looking back, The Last Roll Call was an eye-opening event: it highlighted the significance of celebrating success in all its manifest forms; establishing meaningful relationships; aligning oneself to an all-encompassing identity; and having hopes and dreams that provide fulfilment and propel achievement.
